 The word Vaisakhi  comes word Vaisakh which is name of month in Hindu and Punjabi Calender. 

The month of vaishakh  symbolies renewal and regeneration , rippening and fruition.

Vaisakhi is a festival of joy, a time when the months of hard work done by the farmers in the field ai readpped.   With the crop coming in the rural countrysided becomes cash rich and ready to enjoy and spend beyond necessities. This is also the time between crops, and it  provides leisure time in days ahead.

Religious Significance: 

Budh Faith:It is fortuitous that it was on this day Gautam Buddha  { From Budh faith } received  enlightment and became the Buddha, hearliding a new dawn for indian civilization.

Sikhism: For Sikh Faith  This is very Important day.  On this Day in the year 1699 Guru Gobind Singh ji Maharaj  the 10th guru of Sikhism created Khalsa  Panth at Anandpur Sahib, by offering Amrit to the first disciple and also took amrit himself.
The panth was created with the broadbased principles of 

• oneness of God, 
• oneness of human race
• Selfless service
• truthfull living 
• equal rights to man and women
• honest labour an d 
• helping others.

Vaisakhi in the nutshells reminds us all that while it is time of rejoicing over the fruits of hard work , it is also the time that one must resove not to loose values and traditions of our forefathers.
